Former striker Andy Cole has commented on Manchester United’s title chances for next season under Jose Mourinho and believes that winning the title would be equivalent to a trick by “Dynamo the magician.”
Mourinho, who joined the club last month, has won league titles in debut seasons at Porto, Inter and Chelsea.
The 53-year-old has already bolstered the squad by acquiring the services of Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
Cole believes a title in his debut season at Man United would be an almost otherworldly achievement.
“If Jose Mourinho comes to Man United and wins [the Premier League] in the first season I think that would be like Dynamo the magician,” he said.
“It would be fantastic. He’s under no illusions how tough it’s going to be to come to Man United and try and win the Premier League at the first attempt.
“Fingers crossed we have a better season than we did last season.”
If last season taught us anything, it’s that predicting the future champions is a fruitless endeavour. I mean, how many of us predicted Chelsea to win the league last year?
Next season’s title race comprises of more challengers than ever before, it seems: Chelsea, Manchester City and, of course, United have all made impressive managerial appointments; Arsenal will have their annual attempt at the title, only to eventually settle for a Champions League spot; Spurs and Leicester have both strengthened their squads; Liverpool can also be positive as they enter their first full season under Jurgen Klopp.
Where the title goes is anybody’s guess, and Mourinho’s experience, arrogance and panache, alongside a fantastic blend of experienced and young players, will certainly place United as strong contenders.
