Wigan Athletic 0-2 Man United: Player Ratings

by Sam Peoples

Sam Johnstone 6 – Did he have anything to do, at all?

Timothy Fosu-Mensah 6 – There’s definitely something about Fosu-Mensah which has star quality but I’m not sure it is at right-back?

Eric Bailly 7 – Strong and assured showing from Bailly on his debut. It’s Wigan in the pre-season but you want to see your new players starting as they mean to go on.

Daley Blind 6.5 – Not much to say about Blind’s performance other than that it was interesting to see Mourinho play him there instead of in midfield. Slotted in at left-back as well.

Luke Shaw 7 – It was ace to see Shaw back in action and he looked pretty good. Charged forward on so many occasions as you’d expect from him.

Michael Carrick 6 – Deeper role for Carrick today and I think that will suit him. Mkhitaryan dropping deeper meant Carrick didn’t have to do much else than short passes.

Ander Herrera 6.5 – Played the furthest forward out of him and Carrick.

Jesse Lingard 7 – Enjoyed watching him today. Thought his footwork was very good.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan – He showed exactly what he is all about; pace, intent, directness and a real willingness to run at a defender with the ball. He’s confident in his own ability and that shone through. Strong debut.

Memphis Depay 6 – A pretty typical performance from Memphis I suppose. Plenty of promise but not much end product.

James Wilson 6 – Some good movement from him, didn’t get too many opportunities though.

Adnan Januzaj 6 – Big season ahead for Adnan, arguably make or break. Tried to get on the ball plenty but not too much action.

Antonio Valencia 6 – Was made captain for the second half at right-back. Not much to say about his performance to be honest, nothing good or bad.

Phil Jones– Felt Bailly was better than Jones in defence but we’ll see if he can force his way into Mourinho’s team.

Juan Mata 7 – Made a real impact straight away by intercepting Jussi Jaaskelainen’s clearance to set-up Will Keane for United’s first goal. Enjoyed watching him today.

Will Keane 6.5 – Couldn’t miss after Mata rolled one over for him. Nice to see Keane score, let’s hope his injuries don’t come back to haunt him.

Andreas Pereira 8 – What a hit son. Pereira was frozen out under Louis van Gaal but that net busting effort goes to show what he’s all about. Gets an 8 just for that shot alone!

Ashley Young 6 – A bit like Valencia in that there’s not too much to say about Young’s performance. Sorry, Ash.
