Luke Shaw on emotional Man United comeback: ‘It is the best feeling ever’

Luke Shaw has reflected on his emotional comeback against Wigan Athletic last Saturday.

The 21-year-old was sidelined for ten months after suffering from a double leg break against PSV Eindhoven last September, putting an abrupt end to a season that he had begun so brightly.

After ten months of working back to full fitness, Shaw stepped on to the pitch for the first time since his injury and his first touch of the ball was greeted with rapturous acclaim from the 7,000 travelling Manchester United fans.

Speaking to ManUtd.com, Shaw enthused over what was a special moment.

“It is the best feeling ever,” he said.

“When I had my first game on Saturday against Wigan, I felt so emotional. The way the crowd were with me, the cheers when I first had my first touch… you know that meant a lot to me. Obviously my family were there to see it and like I said it was the best feeling.

“When I first did it the first thoughts that went through my head were ‘am I going to play football again’ and ‘how long am I going to be out for’.

“I wasn’t thinking too much of the pain because I can deal with that at that point but yes there was a fear of how long it was going to take or even if I was going to get back playing football.

“Obviously as I was going through it [the rehabilitation process] I knew I was coming back. I think now I’m just looking past it, I’m not going to look back, I’m just going to look forward now and obviously my leg feels great and you know I just want to push on in this pre-season and get fully fit.”

Football can be a cruel game and Shaw experienced that first hand to the fullest extent. Going into the game against PSV, Shaw had been Man United’s brightest spark; he looked set to make that left-back slot his own, but when his season was immediately cut short, it must have felt like his world was falling apart.

Seeing him come through all of that and take to the field once more was a truly moving sight. On a personal level for Shaw, one can only imagine how incredible being back out on the pitch would have been. United fans will be hopeful that the Englishman picks up from where he left off, acting as an effervescent force on the left hand side, injecting energy and precision in both attack and defence.
