Jose Mourinho: Wayne Rooney will remain Manchester United captain

Jose Mourinho claims Wayne Rooney will remain Manchester United captain next season and insists he cannot understand why so many fans question his talent.

He was deployed in a deeper midfield role by Louis van Gaal last season and also featured in the centre of the pitch for Roy Hodgson’s England squad at Euro 2016.

Rooney admitted he was pleased with his positional change last season, but Mourinho said in his first press conference as Man United boss that he will be used further up the field.

Speaking about Rooney, Mourinho has revealed he really trusts the Englishman and will play a vital role in his squad.

“I am quite surprised with so many question marks around this guy,” he said.

“I know that at the national-team level you have this capacity of trying to make things complicated for yourself, so what happened around him in the summer was not a surprise for me.

“But in my club we are not going to have that. He is the club captain, he is the manager’s captain, he is the players’ captain.

“I trust him a lot. I think he’s going to be a very important player for me and no problem for him.

“He knows that he has to work hard, he knows that, but I think that is nothing new in his career. Everything he got I see nobody offered him, he had to fight for it. With me it is not going to be different. But, yes, he is my captain.”

While there were some positive signs of his ability in the centre of the field, it doesn’t look like Mourinho will continue to play England’s record goal scorer as a midfielder next season.

He has gotten slower as he enters the latter stages of his career, but Mourinho will now be looking to reignite his goal scoring appetite as they enter the new Premier League season.

He’s an extremely versatile player who will provide Mourinho with plenty of options as they head into the new campaign and after his comments we could be looking at an Ibrahimovic-Rooney combination up front.
