Ander Herrera: Man United’s Luke Shaw amongst the best in the world

Ander Herrera has hailed Luke Shaw as one of the “best left-backs in the world” after his performance against Borussia Dortmund last Friday.

Shaw made an emotional comeback against Wigan Athletic last week after being sidelined for 10 months with a double leg fracture.

In the searing 37 degrees Shanghai heat, the 21-year-old played a full 90 minutes and delighted Manchester United fans with his outstanding energy, serving as a constant presence on the left hand side.

Herrera, who also completed 90 minutes in the 4-1 loss, was full of praise for the Englishman.

“He has played for 90 minutes after 10 months without playing,” he said.

“You can see he is very, very quick and sometimes when you are not used to getting the ball at your feet then you can make some mistakes, but what we want from Luke is that he gets to the last line to make some crosses and he is doing that.

“We are very happy with him and we are very happy for him because it has been very tough for him. We have one of the best left-backs in the world and we have to take advantage of him.”

The level of energy displayed by Shaw was beyond belief. For a man who has only played once in 10 months, playing in extreme heat and humidity, against powerful opposition on a challenging pitch, seems almost impossible.

But Shaw, whilst his teammates wilted, thrived and grew into the game, once again displaying his raw energy and commitment to the cause – something van Gaal’s side strongly missed for large parts of the 2015/16 campaign.
