Matteo Darmian returns to Man United training after extended summer break

Matteo Darmian has returned to training with Manchester United ahead of the 2016/17 season.

The 26-year-old missed out on Man United’s pre-season tour of China due to being on a mandatory FIFA-imposed three week break after reaching the quarter finals of Euro 2016 with Italy.

The Italian, who came to Old Trafford last summer, began his debut season brightly – earning the Man of the Match award on his Premier League debut – before regressing as the season went on.

Darmian’s most recent Instagram post shows that the defender is in good spirits ahead of returning to work, this time under Jose Mourinho.

Despite a disappointing campaign, United fans are well aware of Darmian’s defensive prowess. In his first month at Old Trafford, the 26-year-old displayed everything you’d demand of a right back: strength, composure, precise passing, a cool head, a capacity to thwart attacks, positional know-how, and even an aptitude for offering something on the attack.

United fans, players and coaching staff alike all know that, when in form, Darmian can be an indomitable force on the right side of defence. Under Mourinho, known for his ability to nurture promising defenders into world-beaters, Darmian has an excellent opportunity to rediscover the blistering form he showed last year.
