Joe Riley joins in Manchester United’s first-team training

Manchester United youngster Joe Riley took part in Manchester United’s training sessions this week ahead of our game against Leicester City on Sunday.

The 19-year-old made his Man United debut last season but up until this point hasn’t been included by Jose Mourinho at any point.

However, he’s been training with the first-team in the build-up to Leicester which indicate Mourinho has been keeping his eye on him (pictured wearing No.49).

It’s good news for Riley. Soon after the tour squad was announced, he sent a tweet out saying ‘Shambles’ which was construed as being his reaction to being left out. He soon deleted the messaged and suggested it was something entirely unrelated to his omission but we’re going to continue reading between the lines and feel it was a split second reaction which he subsequently took down.

But regardless of that, Riley will be happy at training with the senior players. It means he is in and around Mourinho’s squad and that’s a big mental boost for him. In terms of his opportunities, Riley is a versatile player who is comfortable at full-back and in midfield which suggests that’s where Mourinho sees the squad’s potential weak points for Sunday.

It’ll be tough for Riley to get much game time this year but all he can do is work hard in training to impress Mourinho, that’s the only way he’ll get a chance.
