Jose Mourinho is delighted to finally have Paul Pogba on the verge of joining Manchester United but warned him he wouldn’t simply walk straight into the starting XI.
Man United announced on Sunday that Pogba is set for a medical at the club this week before completing his move back to Old Trafford.
Mourinho has held his tongue when questioned about Pogba up until this point but speaking after the Community Shield victory, he made it clear how happy he was to have secured him.
When questioned if Pogba was close to joining, Mourinho said: “I think so. Finally, so, he’s amazing that such a good player will be with us and finally we have him and he comes to a winning side. A side that won the last two matches (FA Cup + Charity Shield) and he’ll have to work hard to get in the team.”
I don’t think any of us are under any sort of illusion because Pogba absolutely is walking straight into our starting XI, regardless of what Mourinho says, because he is by far and away going to be better than any midfielder in our squad. Pogba, back at United – that’s going to take a while to settle in.
We made a huge mistake letting Pogba go four years ago, it was one of Sir Alex’s biggest mistakes, but we’ve swallowed our pride and forked out a world record transfer to correct our errors. It’s one hell of a statement signing from United and after three years of obscurity and a lack of identity, Mourinho has taken huge steps towards regenerating that in the last two months.
