Thierry Henry: Manchester United should give Paul Pogba advanced midfield role

Former France and Arsenal striker Thierry Henry has urged Jose Mourinho to deploy new signing Paul Pogba in a more advanced role at Manchester United.

After several weeks of speculation, Man United announced that the 23-year-old was set to have a medical ahead of an £89m move to Old Trafford which he subsequently completed.

A large majority of United fans were dismayed to see Pogba leave the club in such gloomy circumstances four years earlier and news of his return yielded rapturous acclaim.

Speaking on Sky Sports earlier, Henry expressed his enthusiasm at the prospect of seeing his fellow countryman play in the Premier League, and asserted that his best position was further forward.

“The way I would like to see him play is in a more advanced position,” he said.

“I think in the Euros he played for France in a deeper role. As long as the ball is in front of him he can deal with it but as soon you have runs behind him he tends to forget to defend.”

“When he plays in a higher position he can be more efficient, he has tonnes of skills, he can score goals. I think he will help Manchester United in that position, I don’t think it’s a good thing if they play him as only a midfielder. I’m very excited to see him play in the Premier League.”

“He can definitely help Man United and he shouldn’t play as a holding midfielder. The only problem at the moment is that the amount of money that goes into the transfer is crazy and I don’t know if it’s worth it or not.”

Despite the positive result, United’s contest with Leicester City was hallmarked by a dissonance between midfield and attack. With Wayne Rooney acting as this crucial mediator, attacking moves lacked in fluidity and precision.

That said, with Pogba in that role, Mourinho now has someone who can slit open a defence with one simple pass or turn. As a springboard for attacks at both Juventus and with his national side, the 23-year-old has made his name through acting as the nucleus of his side’s attacking stimulus.

United fans ought to be salivating at the prospect of Pogba orchestrating games with his immense strength and dizzying technical ability, which will only draw the best out of players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial
