Gary Neville has insisted Manchester United can win the title this season under Jose Mourinho.
After finishing fourth in Louis van Gaal‘s debut season in England, many tipped Man United to launch an assault on the title in the following campaign, only to be disappointed when a turgid style of football led to the Dutchman’s side managing fifth.
However, under new manager Mourinho and his impressive array of lucrative signings, United fans are once again hopeful of a successful title challenge in the upcoming campaign.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville claimed that this current United side is capable of challenging for the title.
“I will say Manchester United for the title,” he said.
“Ibrahimovic is an important signing for Manchester United. They are not getting him in his peak or in his best years, but in the last two or three years the club has deteriorated in performance and also in entertainment, which is a fundamental at United.
“Our league has struggled to entice Grade-A players and has struggled to keep hold of them because Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Barcelona have taken most of them off us – so for Manchester United to get Paul Pogba is not only a big moment for United, but for the Premier League.
“They have a manager with personality and stature. With those three people – and a couple of players who were already there – then there’s an arrogance back in the club and the city.”
With Mourinho, Pogba and Ibrahimovic all under the same roof, United regain their rightful place as the supreme objects of fear and hatred in the Premier League – fear because these three are serial winners, rivalled by none, who will stop at nothing to obliterate what lies in front of them. And hatred because – as is the case with serial winners – these are perhaps the three most arrogant, commanding characters in the game today who, simply by being there, will regenerate that siege mentality made famous by Sir Alex Ferguson.
This upcoming season, replete with a new manager and various fresh faces, resembles a new order at Old Trafford and yet also harks back to the old, glorious order of yesteryear, where United threatened to conquer all with an evil, villainous smile. An immense season lies ahead. Prepare for fireworks.
