Jose Mourinho has revealed he made a phone call to Marouane Fellaini helping the midfielder find his impressive form.
The Belgian has excelled under Mourinho at Manchester United and put in another spectacular showing against Southampton while alongside his third different defensive midfield partner.
He linked up well with Man United’s world-record signing Paul Pogba, who completed his Old Trafford move earlier in the month.
Speaking about his form, Mourinho claims one phone call was the reason behind his recent form.
“Maybe a simple phone call can make a difference,” he said.
“The player that was feeling not loved, a player that was feeling when the market opened, everybody was saying he was leaving, everybody was writing was not the player for me, he was on the move, maybe a simple phone call the day after my presentation changed a lot.
“Because I told him just simply, ‘Forget everything you read, forget everything, with me you don’t leave for sure.’ Maybe that word of confidence – unexpected for him – maybe changed and I think the more organised the team played the easier for the players to feel confident.
“He’s played well with Carrick, he played well with Herrera, he played well with Paul, I think he’s full of confidence.”
He was linked with plenty of clubs at the start of the transfer window and was often used as a scapegoat by United fans.
However, Mourinho seems to have restored Fellaini’s confidence and as a result he has made a superb start to the new campaign.
If you had told me last season Fellaini would still be at the club I would have been disappointed, but he has been a stand-out performer under Mourinho and it’s brilliant to see him find his confidence again.
