Jamie Redknapp: Adnan Januzaj needs to stop blaming Man United and start performing

Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp believes Adnan Januzaj has to take responsibility for his performances as opposed to blaming Manchester United for a lack of game-time.

Januzaj has failed to build on his groundbreaking debut season at Man United and was reportedly determined to leave the club after Jose Mourinho omitted the Belgian from his first-team squad ahead of the 2016/17 campaign.

The 21-year-old left for Sunderland on a season-long loan earlier this month, reuniting with David Moyes, who told Januzaj to stop blaming external factors for his lack of success over the past two years.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Redknapp echoed similar sentiments, urging the youngster change his attitude and work hard to prove his critics wrong.

“(He has) a god given talent that only a few possess. He needs to make a mark now though,” he said.

“He’s got to the stage where he’s been on loan at Dortmund, it didn’t work out.

“It felt like he was sort of blame Dortmund, blame Man Utd, go and play, go and show us what you can do now, this is your opportunity.

“He’s got a gift. He can go by people as though they’re not there.

“There are some players who need a kick up the backside at all times, and there are others that need to be given a bit more love.

“He is going to get that now from David Moyes, and he could become a hero up there.”

Januzaj has encountered two rocky years in the early stages of his career. He was ostracised by Louis van Gaal, shipped off to Borussia Dortmund (where he barely featured), called back in February (whereupon, once again, he barely featured, playing just 17 minutes altogether), before being deemed not good enough by Mourinho and shipped out on loan once more.

After making such a seismic impact in his debut season, the Belgian’s frustration is understandable. But this loan move, under the tutelage of Moyes, who oversaw the zenith of Januzaj’s career, is his chance to set the record straight.
