Ian Wright: Jose Mourinho should play Paul Pogba in the No.10 role at Man United

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has insisted that Jose Mourinho should deploy Paul Pogba in the No.10 role at Manchester United this season.

Pogba made a sensational start to his (second) Man United with a powerful, domineering performance against Southampton, acting as the centrepiece of a 2-0 win.

The Frenchman was played in a defensive midfield role alongside Marouane Fellaini, dictating proceedings from deep.

Speaking on BBC Radio Five Live, Wright claimed that Pogba would be far more influential at No.10.

“I think Pogba will end up playing much further forward,” Wright said.

“When you saw him in the more advanced position, he just breezes past people. He can do everything. That is wasted if he is too deep. I can see him playing the No10 role. It will be impossible to stop him.”

From a deeper midfield role, Pogba ran the entire game on his debut. A combination of strength, skill and power had the Southampton midfield constantly on the back foot all night.

But it was when the 23-year-old surged forward, allowing that enormous physique to reach top gear, that he looked most devastating. His monstrous legs – both huge and dainty – ate up ground as he rampaged through a bewildered Southampton defence.

Deployed at No.10, the Frenchman could unleash his frightening running power with reckless abandon, whilst launching attacks from the axis of United’s attacking line-up. It is, needless to say, a tantalising prospect, and United fans will be hoping that Jose Mourinho will give Pogba the chance to demonstrate his superiority over Wayne Rooney in that role sooner rather than later.
