Phil Jones was pictured training ahead of Manchester United’s game against Hull City amid rumours of an impending transfer away from Old Trafford.

It was reported earlier this week that Stoke City manager Mark Hughes was keen on securing the 24-year-old’s signature.

Jones hasn’t featured in any of Jose Mourinho’s match-day squads, and his last appearance in a red shirt dates back to January 2.

Nonetheless, the defender was seen working hard in preparation for this weekend’s fixture.

Jones’ future at Man United looks more precarious than ever. Injuries have quickened his demise into anonymity, and with the likes of Eric Baily, Chris Smalling, Daley Blind and even Marcos Rojo ahead of him in the defensive pecking order, game time will be in short supply this season.

Such a rapid demise is hard to take for United fans. Indeed, the days of Jones acting as the barbaric, dedicated force at the back aren’t too long ago. Sir Alex Ferguson labelled him as a ‘future captain’ for a reason: he had strength, drive and an ability to galvanise his side. Unfortunately, it seems as if those days are a thing of the past for the Englishman, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him move on.
