Portland Timbers owner Merritt Paulson: Wayne Rooney would be a great signing for MLS

Portland Timbers owner Merritt Paulson believes Manchester United captain would be a great signing for the MLS.

He still has three years left on his five-year contract at Old Trafford and would be at least 33 by the time his contract expires.

As one of the biggest names in English football for the last decade, Rooney would attract plenty of interest should he chose to follow Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard to the America.

Speaking about a deal, Paulson insists the MLS would be attractive for him.

“I would argue he still has some good soccer ahead of him,” he said.

“I think he would be a great signing for MLS – 100 percent MLS would be attractive for him.

“Keeping in mind that is a very talented footballer, who has quality soccer ahead of him, you are not talking about a 34 or 35 year old.”

There are still question marks over his future at the club and country, but he will be in no rush to leave Old Trafford under new boss Jose Mourinho.

While Zlatan Ibrahimovic has flourished as he has aged, Rooney hasn’t followed the same path and blossoming early seems to have taken a lot out of him as a player.

Clubs in Major League Soccer and the Chinese Super League have always been interested in his services and he could favour a move as he enters the latter stages of his career.
