The Spaniard has said to have reached an understanding with the Portuguese boss that he will stay at Old Trafford but will not be an automatic first choice like he was under Louis van Gaal.
His future at the club came under heavy speculation when Mourinho was appointed as manager in May and was linked with a summer move to Everton under Ronald Koeman.
However, Mourinho confirmed Mata still has plenty to offer and will have a role on his Man United side this season.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan completed his £26 million transfer from Borussia Dortmund this summer and is thought to be Mourinho’s first-choice right-winder, even though he hasn’t played much of a part yet.
It’s unlikely for Mata to be sold this summer, especially after the pair have cleared the air, but he will have stick to his reduced role and prove himself whenever he is given the opportunity.
There is plenty of squad depth at Untied and September will be the perfect time for the Spaniard to hit the ground running and try and cement his place on the first-team with some impressive performances.
