Paul Scholes: Anthony Martial and Juan Mata must improve under Jose Mourinho

Paul Scholes believes Juan Mata and Anthony Martial must improve their game under Jose Mourinho at Manchester United to stay on the first-team.

Mourinho’s side left it late to secure all three points over Hull City on Saturday evening, despite dominating possession and having plenty of shots on target, Man United weren’t able to capitalise early.

They managed to find the late-winner in the second minute of stoppage-time when Marcus Rashford found the back of the net after coming off the bench in the second-half.

Speaking about their performances, Scholes claimed Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Rashford have more to offer.

“I think [Anthony] Martial has to improve,” Scholes said.

“I think Juan Mata has to improve. They both have great ability, don’t get me wrong, but at this moment I think I’d rather have Marcus [Rashford] and Henrikh [Mkhitaryan] in the team.”

Both players showcased glimpses of their ability against Southampton, but have struggled to find consistency under Mourinho so far.

With plenty of competition for first-team places at Old Trafford, a poor performance could be the difference between dropping behind a team-mate in the pecking order and finding themselves on the bench.

Hopes are they able to get back into their stride under Mourinho as they both played massive roles with Louis van Gaal last season and will be looking to do so once again this year.
