Wayne Rooney insists Jose Mourinho has revived Manchester United’s winning mentality after they have lacked confidence in recent years.
Mourinho’s side has started the new Premier League campaign perfectly and secured their third successive win against Hull City on Saturday afternoon.
Man United head into the international break joint top at nine points with Antonio Conte’s Chelsea and Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
Speaking about the Portuguese boss, Rooney claims his arrival at Old Trafford has been beneficial for all the players.
“You look at the years when José won the title at Chelsea, they always started well, but I think the way it’s been for us the last two or three seasons, it was important for us as a team,” Rooney said.
“José has brought that experience in, that winning mentality again. That’s showing in the players and it’s maybe lacked over the last couple of years.
“It’s early but you want to try to build momentum and especially going into the international break. To go there with three wins is important and with the next game being Man City it was a big win for us, even though it’s so early in the season. We know whatever happens against City isn’t going to define the season but it’s always nice to go into that break with the three wins.”
Rooney’s position in the United squad has come under crticism this season after some disappointing showings, he didn’t have much of a game against Hull, even though he produced the winning play of the game to set up Rashford for the late-winner.
The Englishman has praised Mourinho for the impact he has made in such a short space of time and his work has been evident as the Portuguese boss continues to get the best out of his players.
He has managed to lift the ill feeling Louis van Gaal and David Moyes left at Old Trafford by taking United from a mid-table club into favourites to lift the trophy this year.
