Southampton defender Jose Fonte has opened up about his failed Manchester United summer transfer.

He was heavily linked with an £8 million move to Old Trafford after impressing during a solid Euro 2016 campaign where Portugal were crowned champions.

Fonte was also reportedly set for a swap deal for Marcos Rojo and fans were expecting to see him in a Man United shirt this season.

Speaking about his failed move, he told reporters to leave the links for another time.

“Was I disappointed the Man United move didn’t happen? Let’s leave that for another time,” he said.

“Now I’m focused on Southampton. I have lots of targets: to play in the [UEFA] Champions League, to play in a World Cup, to win a trophy in England.”

Despite committing himself to Southampton, Fonte was quick to point out he would like to play at a club with Champions League football.

He would have brought plenty of knowledge and experience to the United back four and would have been a better defensive option than Rojo.

Fonte has proven to be a consistent performer at St Mary’s and could be looking to make a switch when Mourinho’s side are back in the Champions League.
