Raphael Varane: Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United offer was difficult to turn down

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane insists it was difficult to turn down Jose Mourinho and a move to Manchester United this summer.

The 23-year-old has developed into a world-class centre-back since moving to the Bernabeu from Lens in 2011 and was one of the game’s most promising youngsters.

He worked with Mourinho during his three-year tenure at Madrid and the United coach played a vital role in his development.

Speaking about the proposed move, Varane claimed the interest in his services was flattering.

“Of course it’s flattering,” he said.

“Manchester United are a very big club. But from the moment when Madrid and I are in sync on my project, there’s no questions to ask yourself.

“I have always said I feel good in Madrid. It’s not easy to say ‘No’ to Jose Mourinho, but you have to weigh up the pros and the cons. We’re men, we have decisions to make and that’s how it is.”

It’s no surprise to hear Jose wanted to be reunited with the Frenchman at Old Trafford after he helped get his career on the right track.

Varane wants to work on himself at Madrid but there’s no doubt the Portuguese boss will be keeping an eye on the situation and will be looking to tempt him away if he isn’t receiving enough game-time under Zinedine Zidane.
