Ander Herrera vows to make Manchester United fans proud in the derby

Ander Herrera has vowed to make Manchester United fans proud of their team in the derby on Saturday at Old Trafford.

Over the last five years the rivalry between Man United and City has grown in importance following the rise of the blue side of Manchester thanks to the Sheikh’s money, and Saturday’s game is now between the two early title favourites.

Following the arrival of Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola, the derby also been sprinkled by some extra stardust and having played in four previously, Herrera is under no illusion how important the game is to fans of United.

I think Herrera can feel pretty hard done by so far this season and it’s certainly not the first time that’s been said. Throughout the pre-season he started every game and I’d go as far as to say he was our best player yet Jose Mourinho has chosen to drop him for Marouane Fellaini. Despite the Belgian’s excellent performances, Herrera has every right to be somewhat frustrated and that’s the story of his United career to date.

Herrera is a player who United should have been getting more out of ever since he arrived from Atletic Bilbao but to date he’s been underused and incorrectly pushed to the side. Will that change under Mourinho? The pre-season filled me with hope that would be changing this season but it looks to be much of the same so far.

I suppose it’s the strength and depth of the squad that we can leave a player like Herrera on the bench and still look quality in midfield but as good as Fellaini is, I’d rather United played somebody like Herrera alongside Paul Pogba because our midfield would offer so much more.

Until then, Herrera will just have to stay on side with the fans and fight his way into our starting XI just like he has done since joining. The only way that is going to change is working hard on the training ground and forcing his way into our team.
