Man United almost managed to offload Bastian Schweinsteiger this summer – report

Marseille made a late approach to sign Bastian Schweinsteiger from Manchester United this summer, according to reports.

The German has been deemed a surplus to requirements at Old Trafford after falling out of favour with new manager Jose Mourinho.

Although he was named in Mourinho’s Premier League squad earlier this month, he has still not featured under the Portuguese boss so far.

Telefoot claim the French club tried to end Schweinsteiger’s Old Trafford exile with a late swoop.

Club directors approached Man United over a deal, but contact was allegedly started too late in the window for a deal to be reached.

Bastian’s £200,000-a-week wages were said to be a stumbling block in the negotiations as Marseille could not afford to offer him the same wages.

His future at Old Trafford is still unclear under Mourinho, even if he makes an appearance, United are well-stocked in midfield and he will have to seriously impress the Portuguese boss if he wants to fight his way back into the side.
