Eric Bailly has opened up about Jose Mourinho and his centre-back partnership with Daley Blind.

The Ivorian has made an exceptional start to life at Manchester United, deservedly picking up the August Player of the Month award following a series of indomitable displays alongside Blind.

Even in the aftermath of defeat to Manchester City, Mourinho singled out the 22-year-old, lauding his herculean performance against Pep Guardiola’s side.

Reflecting on his first month at Old Trafford, Bailly was quick to heap praise on Mourinho and Blind.

“Daley has a lot of experience in the Premier League and the combination between us two has worked very quickly,” he said.

“I think it’s precisely the manager’s strategy: there’s a good connection between us. It’s important for the defence and I hope it will go on like this.”

“With the efforts we make every week, I think we can go all the way to a cup final – and why not win the Premier League? We have to work hard and I hope we’ll make it.”

The fact that Bailly and Blind have managed to keep Chris Smalling – the proverbial heartbeat of the side last season – out of the starting XI is a startling testament to the immediate chemistry developed between the two.

In the case of Blind and Bailly, it seems as if opposites really do attract: the Dutchman’s craftiness, positional sense and deftness on the ball blends superbly with the Ivorian’s controlled barbarism, precipitating a seemingly complete – and yet unlikely – partnership. The artist and the warrior, somehow working in perfect tandem.

United fans will be keen to see exactly how this partnership develops and whether Smalling will manage to reassert himself on the starting XI.
