Jose Mourinho reveals how he convinced Paul Pogba to join Man United

Jose Mourinho has shed light on how he convinced Paul Pogba to join Manchester United this summer.

The Frenchman, amid interest from Real Madrid, arrived at Old Trafford last month after a world record £89m fee was agreed between Man United and Juventus.

Upon arriving at United, Pogba claimed that returning to Carrington felt like returning home, labelling his time at Juventus as similar to a holiday.

However, Mourinho revealed that convincing Pogba to choose United over Madrid was difficult task.

“Oh! It was hard to convince him,” he said.

“I had many [conversations] on the phone, lots of SMS.

“I think he was getting one in the morning from the manager from another big club and one in the afternoon from myself. I had to try hard to convince him to choose us instead of the other one.”

The 53-year-old has garnered a reputation of being an astute negotiator, somewhat falling in line with his strictly pragmatic attitude when it comes to getting things done. Whether it be closing out a 1-0 win, convincing a player to join him or putting journalists on the back-foot, the Special One gets what he wants.

And with Pogba, the nucleus of Mourinho’s dynamic, physically imposing approach, now under his wing, an important decision needs to be made with regard to his best position. The defeat to Manchester City, whilst unavoidably disappointing, revealed that the Frenchman benefits from having a defensive midfielder acting as an anchor behind him, providing Pogba with freedom to roam forward.

United fans will be desperate to see Pogba, a genuine superstar, feature in a position that allows him to inflict maximal damage in the future.
