The 26-year-old, following a bright start, struggled for the majority of last season and is yet to make any of Mourinho’s match-day squads.
Darmian was reportedly keen on securing a move away from Old Trafford prior to the 2016/17 season, leading to rumours that his relationship with the Special One had completely broken down.
According to Calcio Mercato, Antonio Conte – who handed the Italian his international debut back in 2014 – is the favourite to secure Darmian’s signature, with Napoli and Juventus also reportedly interested as well.
Persistent rumours surrounding a move away for Darmian, along with Mourinho’s reported interest in Brazilian right-back Fabinho, illustrate a clear dissonance between the two.
The sudden resurgence of Antonio Valencia at right back has precluded Darmian from making an impact on the first-team. His failure to even make the bench is perhaps evidence that Mourinho is conscious of the shakiness that hallmarked the Italian’s game towards the latter stages of last season.
That said, with the Europa League and League Cup lingering on the horizon, the right-back will receive the chance to set the record straight at United in the coming weeks.
