Player Ratings: Feyenoord 1-0 Manchester United

by Sam Peoples

David de Gea 6 – I think De Gea smoked a 20 pack of Marlboro Lights tonight in goal didn’t he? Wasn’t doing much else.

Matteo Darmian 5.5 – He’s got plenty of work to do to re-find the sort of form he showed at the start of last season but did put in some good crosses and had his moments. Not the best performance though.

Chris Smalling 5.5 – Great to see him back. Not an outstanding performance but I think he and Bailly will be our centre-back partnership over the course of the season.

Eric Bailly 5 – Gave United fans a scare in the first half after going off with a dead leg but recovered. Like the look of his partnership with Smalling.

Marcos Rojo 3 – On that performance, not like we didn’t know it already, but Rojo won’t be usurping Luke Shaw any time soon. Lost track of how many times he was out of position.

Morgan Schneiderlin 6 – Excellent from Morgan. Don’t try and tell me he isn’t better in pretty much every way in that defensive midfield role than Marouane Fellaini.

Ander Herrera 6 – Continued where he left off against Man City. Showed real tenacity in an aggressive game tonight and I think he should be in the starting XI to face Watford.

Paul Pogba 5 – Very surprised at his first half performance in a free roaming role because he was almost invisible.

Anthony Martial 5 – It’s a slow start to the season for Tony which continued in that first half. Had his moments but Feyenoord too strong in defence.

Marcus Rashford 5 – Feyenoord limited him because they were so aggressive. Was too isolated.

Juan Mata 4 – Really struggled in this game because he got out-strengthened on every occasion by a Feyenoord side whose game plan was to play tough.

Substitutes

Memphis Depay 5 – Went for a stunner first time effort with a shot and was just a bit off.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic 6 – Made a difference by giving United a target man up front who could hold the ball up

Ashley Young 5.5 – I think Young played well. Was a middle man for United’s moves and happy in that role.
