Watford 3-1 Manchester United: Player ratings

by Sam Peoples

David de Gea 5 – Critics will try and say he should have gone with his hands for Capoue’s opener but De Gea’s technique is unique to him.

Antonio Valencia 5 – Watford made it difficult for him going forward by defending in numbers. Outmuscled by Deeney on occasions too.

Chris Smalling 5 – Huge communication error with De Gea which should have led to a goal, unsure if De Gea didn’t call or Smalling didn’t listen.

Eric Bailly 5 – Think him and Smalling left a lot to be desired against Watford, especially with that at the end for the penalty.

Luke Shaw 6 – Best player for United in the first half but that’s not saying much. Didn’t do too much wrong.

Marouane Fellaini 6 – Very strong in the challenge in the first half but didn’t track Capoue for his goal. The fact his passing range was better than Rooney’s says it all. Poor defending though.

Paul Pogba 5 – Quiet until his shot hit the crossbar but still a muted first half. Better (ish) in the second but defending for the second was awful, he ball watched with Fellaini.

Marcus Rashford 6.5 – Watford crowded him out every time he had the ball but our changed shape in the second gave him space. Poachers finish to equalise.

Wayne Rooney 4.5 – Not really sure what role Rooney tried to play in the first half to be honest. Tried and failed too much in the second.

Anthony Martial N/A – Don’t think it’s fair to give him a rating in this game. That head collision took him out of the match, unfortunately not before he was fouled by Watford which led to the goal.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic 6 – Zlatan didn’t fit at all in the first half but much better in the second. Dropped deeper and created Rashford’s equaliser, better second half.

Ashley Young 5 – He genuinely passed it backwards when he had a chance to shoo at an open goal. Did an alright job at right-back.

Juan Mata– Better than Rooney but failed to create really.

Memphis Depay N/A
