Michael Carrick: I don’t have to prove myself to Jose Mourinho at Man United

Michael Carrick insists he doesn’t have to prove himself to Jose Mourinho at Manchester United as the Portuguese boss is aware of what he has to offer.

Fans have urged Mourinho to play the Englishman alongside Paul Pogba, who has struggled since his world record move to Old Trafford.

He controlled the game from the centre of the park at Sixfields Stadium and scored a cracking goal from the edge of the area.

When asked if he has to prove himself to the new manager, Carrick claimed he hasn’t been looking to change his game.

“He knows what I can do and I’m not going to change myself now,” he said.

“You play some games and you miss some, everyone has to calm down a little bit in terms of how they’re reacting to the changes in the team.

“We’re all in it together.”

It was his first showing since the Community Shield defeat against Leicester City and Carrick has undoubtedly proven he still has plenty left to offer.

He has more than repaid his manager’s faith with his wonderful showing today and hopes are Mourinho will trial him alongside Pogba, as Scholes has suggested after Marouane Fellaini has failed to make the role his own.
