Ron Atkinson: Jose Mourinho will turn it around at Manchester United

Former Manchester United manager Ron Atkinson believes Jose Mourinho can turn Manchester United’s fortunes around this season.

Mourinho, following a promising start, quickly came under scrutiny after overseeing successive defeats to Manchester City, Feyenoord and Watford.

A 3-1 over Northampton Town in the League Cup on Wednesday night provided some much needed respite for Man United, who play champions Leicester City on Saturday.

Speaking to Manchester Evening News, Atkinson claimed Mourinho has what it takes to turn things around at Old Trafford.

“That’s United,” Atkinson said, reflecting on the media reaction following the side’s recent wilt in form.

“If you lose a game, you can’t win the league; if you win a game, you can win the league. It’s a measure of how big the club is.

“He’ll turn it around. This week has not been too clever because of how well City have played, but there’s a long way to go yet.

“He’s been in the Premier League six years and won it three times, and knows what’s required.”

Prior to United’s game with Man City, they were back; eight days later, they were finished. That, ladies and gentleman, is football today – a ruthless, often illogical results based dictum that looms over every result; a sensationalist perspective, churning out absolute statements with reckless abandon.

And as Mourinho has noted, the remarks of these self-proclaimed ‘Einsteins’ have little bearing on football’s nuanced reality. The 53-year-old, entering his eighth season in English football, understands the Premier League’s modern climate better than most, and will, in time, find a starting XI that aligns with the dynamic, furious nature of English football today.
