Manchester United fans furious with Marcus Rojo’s performance against Zorya

Manchester United fans were furious with Marcos Rojo‘s abject performance during their side’s 1-0 win over Zorya Luhansk in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Rojo, with Luke Shaw injured and Daley Blind being rested, was given a rare opportunity to impress at left back against the Ukrainian side, but the Argentine once again failed to display any composure or intelligence on the ball.

Man United fans didn’t hesitate when it came to criticising the 26-year-old.

Rojo’s introduction to this United side, back in 2014, was supposed to address a lack of strength and power at the back, and his early days at Old Trafford did coincide with a growth in stature.

But as I watched the Argentine, two years on, suffer constant embarrassment at the hands of Zorya winger Oleksandr Karavayev, continuously losing foot races and physical contests, it became hard to understand exactly why Rojo was signed in the first place.

A left-back ought to deliver speed and solidity at the back, offering attacking impetus and defensive assurance in equal measure, but Rojo offers neither, and instead oozes insecurity down the left hand side. It is surely only a matter of time before the Argentine, should he continue in the same vein, is permanently consigned to the backwaters at Old Trafford.
