Video: Zlatan Ibrahimovic getting frustrated at Wayne Rooney’s lack of effort

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was visibly outraged by Wayne Rooney‘s failure to chase the ball down during Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Zorya Luhansk in the Europa League.

The big Swede’s goal – his sixth in a Man United shirt – after 69 minutes was enough to seal an important three points for Jose Mourinho’s side.

Rooney, left on the bench for the second game in a row, was brought on with 23 minutes remaining, whilst Ibrahimovic played the entire game.

But despite this, it was Ibrahimovic – four years older than Rooney, and with less in the tank after making a second successive start – furiously urging the 30-year-old to step up his work rate.

The clip is a scathing illustration of Rooney’s unavoidable descent into terminal sluggishness, acting as an important reminder of the ever-growing gap between what United fans demand of a player and what the captain can deliver.

On the flipside, Ibrahimovic’s desire to chase the ball down, even after 86 minutes of leading the line, is a symbol of the attitude germinating under Mourinho. The Swede, like the boss himself, purely wants to win, and gives everything until the opposition has been successfully battered into submission. It is an attitude United fans adore, and also one that Rooney seemingly lost some time ago.
