Matteo Darmian‘s agent has revealed Napoli are in a position to sign him from Manchester United during the January transfer window.
Man United reportedly turned down offers from Italian clubs during the summer transfer window and the Italian was denied the opportunity to pick up some minutes elsewhere.
He has fallen further down the pecking order with the return to fitness of Luke Shaw, signing of Eric Bailly and emergence of Timothy Fosu-Mensah, he is now looking for a move away from the Premier League.
Speaking about the interest, his agent claims a decision will be made soon as he risks losing his place in the national team.
“He’s playing little or nothing and it’s a shame because he’s an Italy international,” he said.
“If the situation doesn’t change by January, we’ll have to think of something. He risks also losing his place in the national team.
“We’ve got to see what United want to do. Italian clubs have tried, but United closed the door immediately. We’re only at the start of October so there is still time and we will see how the situation evolves.
“Napoli have [Ivan] Strinic in that position, though. I don’t want to do [Napoli sporting director Cristiano] Giuntoli’s work for him, though, and it will be up to them to decide whether they want to make a move for Darmian.”
Although he made 39 appearances under Louis van Gaal during the 2015-16 campaign, Darmian has been sidelined for in-form Valencia.
There is still a chance of him picking up game time with Mourinho rotating his squad for the EFL Cup and Europa League, but it’ll be difficult for him to fight his way back into the Premier League squad.
He arrived at the club and hit the ground running, but inconsistencies on the backline and a set of injuries have stopped him from reaching his full potential.
