Manchester United vs Liverpool: Early team news for the clash

by Leo Nieboer

Henrikh Mkhitaryan remains a doubt for Manchester United’s visit to Anfield next Monday after missing both of Armenia’s World Cup qualifiers.

The Armenian hasn’t featured since Man United’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester City back in early September, and will most likely miss out on the contest with Liverpool.

Luke Shaw, declared ‘not 100% fit’ by Gareth Southgate last week, is also a doubt, but will resume training this week after taking some time off during the international break. Phil Jones is, of course, still unavailable (and water is still wet).

Marouane Fellaini, on the other hand, will be available and raring to go after missing Belgium’s World Cup qualifier with Gibraltar through suspension.

The game takes place on a Monday night, giving South American players like Sergio Romero, Antonio Valencia and Marcos Rojo extra time to recover following their exploits abroad.

Tuesday night resembled the last string of World Cup qualifiers for the October international break, and players will now return to their respective clubs to prepare for upcoming domestic fixtures. United fans will be pleased to see that no new injuries have cropped up during the two week hiatus – a normally precarious period when it comes to niggling set-backs.

The reintroduction of Shaw, who hasn’t played since United’s 2-1 defeat to Watford in September due to a groin strain, serves as the most notable development, whilst Fellaini’s availability could also prove to be decisive: the Belgian, after all, has been a central aspect of United’s last two successful visits to Anfield.
