Liverpool vs Man United: Should Luke Shaw or Daley Blind start at left-back?

by Sam Peoples

Sadio Mane has been one of Liverpool’s most dangerous players and he is certainly a danger man for Manchester United’s defence to contend with on Monday.

With that in mind, whoever plays at left-back for Man United is going to have a very busy night but who starts there is up for debate – should it be Daley Blind or Luke Shaw?

When both fully fit, I’d argue Shaw is United’s first choice left-back but in his absence Blind stepped in brilliantly against Leicester City and played well in the draw with Stoke too. So, there is plenty of reasons to argue why Blind should start instead of the returning Shaw who has missed United’s last few games through injury.

What do United fans think? We posed the question to our Twitter followers and here’s what they had to say:

Opinion is pretty split down the middle on this one but for me there is an obvious answer – both players need to start.

Shaw should return at left-back. Blind has been an excellent deputy but in terms of the attacking style we’ve got, we need Shaw’s pace going forward and defensively we’ll that need in abundance up against Mane. Blind may have kept the out of form Riyad Mahrez quiet but an in-form Mane would see him exposed for pace with Nathaniel Clyne overlapping too.

Instead of being left-back, Blind should return to the heart of defence. We need calm players in our starting XI to face Liverpool because we’ll have almost no time on the ball due to their pressing game, which is exactly why starting Blind makes so much sense. There’s no central defender at United who is better at ball retention and possession than Blind and if we are to win at Anfield we simply can’t give the ball away often – that’s why I want him to start.

But what do you think? Blind or Shaw at left-back? Let us know in the comments below!
