Jose Mourinho explains his decision to start Ashley Young against Liverpool

Jose Mourinho has explained his decision to play Ashley Young against Liverpool on Monday night.

Fans were left surprised after Young was included in the starting XI for the trip to Anfield.

He hasn’t started a Premier League game since winning at Anfield in January and has now played against Jurgen Klopp’s side once again.

Speaking about the Englishman, Mourinho admitted he was very experienced and deserved to start.

Ashley Young is one of the many players who can play on the sides,” he said.

“He has never had a chance to start, only against Northampton.

“He is an experienced player in a big game.

“There is no risk, every time he plays he does his job well.

“When they have the ball we want to defend with 11 players, when we have the ball we want to score.”

After Martial was left out due to an injury, supporters believed Lingard would be starting and it was surprising to see Young’s name on the team sheet.

Mourinho picked him on the wing and insisted there was no risk in starting him, it goes out to show the Portuguese boss knows what his players can offer and they understand what he expects of them.
