Ashley Young delighted to start for Man United against Liverpool

Ashley Young has expressed his delight after receiving the chance to start for Manchester United against Liverpool on Monday night.

The winger made his first Premier League start of the season against Jurgen Klopp’s side and put on a diligent, energetic display out wide, providing some vital cover for Daley Blind.

Jose Mourinho was keen to single out Young for praise following the game, highlighting his impressive levels of stamina in what was a ferociously-paced encounter.

Speaking after the game, Young was evidently pleased with receiving the opportunity to feature in such an important game.

“It’s a tough place to come, he said.

“Of course we wanted to take all three points from the game but we’re happy with the point. We didn’t want to be defeated and we fought to the end, we had great team spirit as always.

“I was slightly tired towards the end of the game but thats obvious when you’re not starting week in week out, I’m delighted to get my start and now we move on to the next game.”

For someone who has only featured sporadically this season, starting just once (against Northampton Town), this was an exceptional achievement of stamina. This was no ordinarily paced game, either, but rather like a Premier League contest on steroids (not literally, I hope).

The midfield battle, convincingly controlled by the indefatigable Ander Herrera, felt almost reminiscent of the inside of a plane’s engine: sheer chaos, no time to breathe, packed with raucous, often uncontrollable energy. Tackles flew in from all corners, and nobody could take more than two, perhaps three touches.

Young’s ability to thrive in such an environment is nothing short of remarkable. His composure on the ball and sheer running power actually eclipsed the likes of Saido Mane and Roberto Firmino, and Man United fans will hope to see performances of a similar nature further down the line.
