Jose Mourinho has explained why Henrikh Mkhitaryan was left out of Manchester United’s squad for their Europa League clash against Fenerbahce.
Fans were hoping to see the Armenian in the starting XI after Mourinho confirmed he was available, but he didn’t even make the bench for the game at Old Trafford.
The 27-year-old has made just one start under Jose Mourinho since his £26million move from Borussia Dortmund.
Speaking before the game, Mourinho confirmed he hasn’t been able to build up any match rhythm.
“One thing is fit and not injured, another thing is match fitness, match intensity and ready to play this game,” he said.
“I play with Lingard and Martial and I have Rashford and Memphis on the bench, I cannot play with everyone at the same time.
He’s made just one start since his move to Man United and has struggled to find his feet under Mourinho.
Mkhitaryan was left out of Armenia’s squad over the international break to help him return to full fitness and has been training for three weeks.
It’s a shame we haven’t seen Mkhitaryan in action but after Mourinho rushed him back against Man City, the Portuguese boss will be looking to ease him back into football.
