Owen Hargreaves: Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the signing of the season

Former Manchester United striker Owen Hargreaves believes Zlatan Ibrahimovic is Jose Mourinho’s signing of the season.

The Swede was signed on a free transfer last summer after his contract at Paris Saint Germain expired in June.

Zlatan has, somewhat unsurprisingly, immediately made a sizeable impact at Old Trafford, netting six goals in all competitions so far.

Hargreaves, speaking earlier this week, insisted Ibrahimovic is without doubt Mourinho’s most valuable signing since arriving at the club in June.

“The signing of the season by far has been Zlatan Ibrahimovic,” he said.

“To get him on a free transfer – and a player of that quality. I wouldn’t like to know where Manchester United would be without Zlatan Ibrahimovic.”

Ibrahimovic’s short time at Man United will be judged purely on the basis of how many goals he scores. His role in this side, however, incorporates far more than just goal-scoring potency. The 35-year-old is, as many teammates have noted, a galvanising figure in the dressing room; a leader without the armband; someone who demands nothing less than complete domination.

Indeed, Zlatan wasn’t signed on the pretext of his goals alone. His unmistakeable aura of omnipotence and arrogance in the pursuit of victory is a valuable asset in itself.
