Luke Shaw responds to Jose Mourinho’s public criticism at Manchester United

Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has responded positively after he was publicly criticised by Jose Mourinho following a 3-1 defeat to Watford.

The 21-year-old was carrying a groin injury during the game against Watford and an error lead to their second goal.

He was subbed off soon after and has been left on the sidelines since, only recently introduced as a late substitute against Liverpool and then making his full return with 90 minutes against Fenerbahce.

Speaking about Mourinho’s criticism, Shaw claims it will help him develop into a better player.

“I am a grown man I can take what the manager says,” he said.

“But I am also still young so I can take on board what he says and improve. You have to listen to your coach and have a good attitude about it.

“I was disappointed with the result but not with what the manager said. I take it on board and look to improve and hopefully I will do that over the next matches.

“Our main priority is defending. At Watford maybe I pushed forward too much. You need to concentrate on the defending part first. As long as we are keeping clean sheets, the more chance we have of winning the game.”

It’s hard to believe Shaw is only at the start of his career, but at 21, there is still time to improve as he gets more experience under his belt.

He’s been unlucky with injuries since last year and will look to put them behind him after a good run of games.

Shaw’s presence on the pitch has been missed, he doesn’t only defend but helps get the ball forward and although Daley Blind has done an impressive job at left-back, it’s been hard to fill Shaw’s shoes.
