Wayne Rooney will not be part of Manchester United’s squad to face Chelsea on Sunday having picked up an injury in training.
Sky Sports reports that Rooney suffered a muscular injury in training and it corroborates separate reports from the Manchester Evening News earlier on Saturday which suggested Rooney had not been by any photographer when the squad made their trip down to London from Stockport.

Having not started four consecutive games in a row, Rooney returned to Man United’s team for our 4-1 win over Fenerbahce on Thursday. However, that was the Europa League which carries a completely different level of significance to any other competition Jose Mourinho’s side are involved in this year.
In previous years, Rooney being injured for Chelsea would be an almost devastating blow but seeing as we haven’t won there since 2012 I don’t think the appearance of an out of form captain is going to have too much of an impact on us. That being said, maybe he’ll still turn up.
The reality is that Rooney isn’t likely to start for United even if he is fit but if reports are correct then Mourinho won’t have the opportunity to play Rooney at all as he is now injured.
