Jose Mourinho singles out Marcos Rojo after stellar performance against Manchester City

Jose Mourinho was quick to point out Marcos Rojo‘s stellar performance during Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Manchester City in the League Cup on Wednesday night.

The Argentine, with Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly and Timothy Fosu-Mensah all unavailable, was given a rare chance to start alongside Daley Blind, much to the dejection of Man United supporters.

However Rojo, to the surprise of many, produced a practically faultless display against Pep Guardiola’s side, giving Kelechi Iheanacho and Sergio Aguero no room to flourish.

Mourinho, speaking after the game, made a point of praising Rojo.

The Argentine, prior to the encounter with Man City, had done absolutely nothing to provide even an iota of assurance amongst United fans since Mourinho’s arrival in June. Every display was hallmarked by a painful lack of mobility, as if every contribution was carried out in slow motion, causing one to wonder whether Mourinho sent the right full-back on loan to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

His display against City, however, put an abrupt stop to that particular trend. Partnered with Blind, he was a bombastic, physical presence all evening, acting as a proverbial battering ram all evening. And with Bailly – such a crucial component of Mourinho’s side – set for a spell on the sidelines, United fans will be desperate to see Rojo continue in the same vein.
