Jose Mourinho has explained why Michael Carrick did not start for Manchester United against Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

Supporters have been excited by the Englishman’s success in the midfield alongside Paul Pogba and were surprised to see him excluded from the squad at Old Trafford.

Each time he has featured for Man United, Carrick has showcased a masterclass in how to control a midfield battle.

Speaking before the game, Mourinho confirmed he wasn’t playing because he has a vital role to play against Fenerbahce in the Europa League.

“Carrick isn’t playing today but he’s important for us against Fenerbahce,” he said.

Mourinho will be looking to Carrick after his stellar performance for Man United against Fenerbahce in the first-leg of the Europa League qualifiers.

Carrick has proven he still has plenty to offer and after being backed to replicate Andrea Pirlo’s impact on Pogba, has shown he can control the game and guide the Frenchman with his experience.

He still has a big role to play at Man United and Mourinho has recently revealed his love for Carrick, stating it’s a pity that he can’t stop the clock on the 35-year-old and keep completely fit at Old Trafford.
