Alexi Lalas warns LA Galaxy against signing Man United’s Wayne Rooney

Former player and general manager Alexi Lalas has warned LA Galaxy not to sign Wayne Rooney as he would be stealing money in America.

The MLS side have famously signed David Beckham and Steven Gerrard – and have now been linked with a move for Rooney.

Rooney has lost his automatic starter status for club and country in recent times and could begin to look for a challenge elsewhere.

Speaking about a proposed move for Rooney, Lalas claims he isn’t the player he was ten years ago.

“They got little return on the Steven Gerrard investment and does Rooney still have much to give and something which works in the MLS, even if he is five years younger than Gerrard,” he said.

“Are you replacing a player who had limited involvement and limited impact, with yet another player who will have limited involvement and limited impact?

“If Rooney, at 31, doesn’t still have the things which made him great, then it’s problematic.

“Living in Beverly Hills is great. But if you don’t couple it with performances on the field then you are just stealing money.

“The player he is now isn’t the player of ten years ago – but then no one is.”

Despite being his country’s captain and record goalscorer, he has failed to have an impact on the side in recent times and others have shown they have more to offer.

Gerrard has struggled to replicate performances that supporters were used to seeing for many years and it’s only right for Lalas to have reservations about Rooney’s role as he enters the latter stages of his career.
