Jose Mourinho criticises Henrikh Mkhitaryan after Fenerbahce defeat

Jose Mourinho has criticised Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the wake of Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to Fenerbahce in the Premier League, claiming the Armenian needs to do more for a place in the starting XI.

Mkhitaryan appeared in a red shirt for the first time since September 10 against Dick Advocaat’s side, coming on after 61 minutes with his side 2-0 down.

The Armenian was a lively presence going forward, making several tidy passes and turns, but couldn’t influence the result.

Speaking after the game, Mourinho made it clear that Mkhitaryan needs to improve if he wants regular game time at Old Trafford.

To point the finger at Mkhitaryan of all people is, to put it nicely, simply laughable. Mourinho has just seen his side suffer their fifth defeat of the season, failing to produce even an iota of drive, attacking potency or urgency, and he decides to blame someone who hasn’t played since September – someone, it should be noted, who put in a perfectly tidy performance despite coming on after nearly two months out, with his side 2-0 down and playing woefully.

Such comments are not just ridiculous but genuinely worrying. Could this be a sign of Mourinho – who signed Mkhitaryan less than four months ago – pushing the 27-year-old towards the exit door?
