Jose Mourinho makes Jose Gimenez signing a top priority – report

Jose Mourinho has prioritised Atletico Madrid centre-back Jose Gimenez as his main transfer target for next summer, according to reports.

The 21-year-old arrived in Spain back in 2013 for €900,000 and has gone on to establish himself as a regular under Diego Simeone.

It was reported earlier in the season that Mourinho had established Atletico’s Antoine Griezmann as his primary target for next year’s transfer window.

However, according to the Mirror‘s John Cross, the 53-year-old has placed Gimenez – who has a £56m release clause – at the top of his list.

The Uruguayan, even at such a young age, possesses an outstanding range of qualities: tall, powerful, clever on the ball, unfailingly brave and truly menacing. You can tell that Gimenez developed under one of the best defensive coaches to ever grace the modern game. Everything he does aligns with a strict, watertight attitude imposed by Simeone, placing emphasis on immense discipline and controlled aggression.

Most would agree, therefore, that bringing Gimenez to Old Trafford would be a shrewd investment. His arrival would send Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo – two notoriously unreliable, shaky defenders – the other way, leaving Mourinho with a mouth watering defensive quartet of Daley Blind, Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly and of course Gimenez himself.
