Ian Wright slams Jose Mourinho for wasting Marcus Rashford at Man United

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has criticised Jose Mourinho for wasting Marcus Rashford on the wing at Manchester United this season.

The 18-year-old immediately rose to stardom under Louis van Gaal following a series of rip-roaring performances in the N0.9 role.

However, the youngster has been primarily deployed on the wing this season, starting as a No.9 just once (against Feyenoord in September).

Wright, following Man United’s midweek defeat to Fenerbahce, believes Rashford deserves a chance to demonstrate his worth up-front.

“Why is Marcus Rashford playing on the wing?” he asked.

“He’s a goalscorer with great movement who finishes and now he’s rotting on the wing!”

The importance of a mobile, energetic and confident No.9, especially in the Premier League’s furiously paced climate, cannot be stressed enough. If the No.9 crumbles under the pressure, losing all confidence as a result, then the entire side follows suit. The striker is the reference point – the mouthpiece of any side.

And with Zlatan Ibrahimovic – now without a goal in eight games – steadily declining in potency, Mourinho needs something fresh and dynamic to bolster the side’s front line.

United fans will agree that Rashford, bursting with fearlessness and aggression, would suit this role perfectly.
