Paul Mariner has questioned Jose Mourinho’s team selection after Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to Fenerbahce in the Europa League on Thursday night.
Moussa Sow opened the scoring in the second minute of play, with Jeremain Lens doubling the lead in the second-half.
Although Wayne Rooney pulled it back with a long range effort later on, it was too late for Man United, who only seemed to apply pressure in the dying minutes of the game.
Speaking after the clash, Mariner claimed Rashford should be playing down the middle.
“To me, they don’t look interested in the game,” he said.
“What raised my eyebrow was the team selection: Rooney through the middle as a No.9 so there’s no threat over the back.
“Why didn’t you play Rashford through the middle? You’ve got Rashford and [Anthony] Martial who have blistering pace.”
United are now sat third in Group A on six points and the result has left their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages uncertain.
The pressure continues to mount on Mourinho and his men after winning just one match last month and they’ll be hoping to get the campaign back on track against Swansea in the Premier League on Sunday.
