Timothy Fosu-Mensah opens up about his position at Manchester United

Timothy Fosu-Mensah has opened up about his position at Manchester United, insisting he is happy to play in a number of positions under Jose Mourinho.

The Dutchman made his debut back in February, featuring at left-back in a 3-2 win over Arsenal, before going on to make a handful of appearances at full-back and centre-back.

Fosu-Mensah’s brute strength and composure during his spell in the first team was awarded last month with a new four-year contract.

Speaking earlier this week, the 18-year-old claimed he was willing to feature in a number of roles at Man United.

“If the manager needs me at centre-back I will play centre-back, but if he needs me in midfield or at full-back of course I’ll play there,” he said.

“I have played in all the positions so as soon as you play in one it feels normal. The manager hasn’t said to me ‘you’re a right-back or you’re a midfielder’ but whenever he needs me I’ll be ready.”

It is barely known that Fosu-Mensah, by trade, is a central midfielder. He burst through the ranks at Ajax on the pretext of strong performances in midfield, but was forced to feature at full-back and centre-back due to a series of injuries in that area. United, in turn, brought the youngster to Old Trafford with his defensive qualities in mind.

One suspects that Fosu-Mensah sees his long-term future in central midfield, but the Dutchman has only featured there twice as a late substitute since breaking into the first-team (against Norwich City in May and Fenerbahce last month).

A player will always have a greater chance of receiving more game-time if they consolidate one exact position, as opposed to fluctuating between several. And Fosu-Mensah, still just 18, will hopefully carve out a definitive role at Old Trafford in the coming years.
