The Dutchman, after a dramatically substandard first season at Old Trafford, finds himself miles down the pecking order under Jose Mourinho.
It was reported earlier this month that Memphis, who has only made one start this season, would be open to a move elsewhere to reignite his career.
And according to Tutto Mercado, Napoli are interested in luring the 22-year-old to Serie A.
When it comes to Memphis, I always find myself thinking: “Okay, he may be underperforming now, but he has got it. He has got it.” Indeed, this was the same player that single handedly turned the tide of Man United’s Champions League qualifier with Club Bruges in 2015. His brilliance was there for all to see. In a game that United simply had to win, he was unstoppable.
But at what point do you draw the line? When do you finally acknowledge that Memphis, for all his talent, needs to move on elsewhere. I mean, when was the last time the Dutchman impressed in the Premier League. Has he ever impressed in the Premier League?
It would be sad to see the 22-year-old go, but Mourinho can only accommodate players who guarantee solid performances, and Memphis simply doesn’t fit the bill.
