Adam Lallana has backed former Southampton team-mate Luke Shaw after he came under fire from Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.
The Portuguese boss criticised Shaw and Chris Smalling as they were forced out the squad through injury during the 3-1 Premier League victory over Swansea City.
It’s the second time Mourinho has put Shaw in the spotlight this season after his comments over his positioning against Watford earlier in the season.
Speaking about Shaw, Lallana claims he’s incredibly strong mentally and physically to be able to return from his horrific leg injury.
“In every sport, many times you play and you are not 100 per cent,” he said.
“To compete, you have to go to the limits. It’s a cultural thing for some, and that’s not my culture.
“There is a difference between the brave, who want to be there at any cost, and the ones for who a little pain can make a difference. For the team you have to do anything.”
“He’s a very strong boy. He’s had a horrific leg injury. You don’t come back from that without being mentally and physically strong.
“You don’t come back from a leg break like he had without having difficult times mentally on your own.”
Shaw is incredibly strong and is a vital player for Mourinho’s side, but at 21, there is still plenty of development ahead for the Englishman.
He’s been working hard with his fitness and hopes are we will see him back in action against Arsenal after the international break.
